Frequently Asked Questions

  • What exactly is Academic Coaching?

Academic coaching is a partnership to strategize on how to best accomplish a personal or academic goal. It is not tutoring on course content, but rather it’s like having an executive or life coach for a student. Coaching services are provided virtually over a defined set of sessions throughout a semester.

  • What types of students do you work with?

ACES with Deborah works with college and university students only (i.e. not K-12 students). These students include undergraduates and graduates, international students, students with disabilities, students in professional schools, individuals studying for high-stakes exams, first-generation students, and nontraditional students.

  • What do you mean "students with disabilities"?

Deborah has been the director of disability services for a graduate institution for over the past decade. As such, ACES with Deborah invites students of ALL abilities to utilize its services- especially students with specific conditions that may impact their academic experience. These conditions could include: ADHD, learning disabilities, dyslexia, ASD, mental health conditions, neurological conditions, mobility and/or sensory conditions, and students with chronic health conditions.

  • How does academic coaching help students with these conditions?

These conditions may affect a student's executive functioning (EF), which is considered a significant component in postsecondary education. When participating in academic coaching, students are supported in building upon these skills that positively impact their personal and professional development.

  • What topics are covered in Academic Coaching?

The topics are tailored to each students’ specific needs but could include: Defining Personal Goals and Values, Time Management strategies, Proper Utilization of Academic Accommodations, Weekly-Daily Planning, use of Assistive Technology, Brain-based Studying Techniques, Test-Taking Strategy, School-Life Balance, Professional Communication skills, Dissertation or Licensing exams goals, and Establishing Healthy Habits throughout the semester.

  • Is ACES with Deborah considered mental health counseling?

While ACES with Deborah is NOT mental health treatment, and is not covered by health insurance, its services could be used in conjunction with a mental health provider, to provide focused attention on skillsets needed for a successful and productive semester.
